Eligibility & Registration
Is the first stage an open competition? The first stage of the competition is open to all architects registered in Australia.
As a studio of registered Building and Interior Designers are we able to enter the competition? It is mandatory that at least one member of your team be an architect registered in Australia.
Is an entrant registered and practicing in Australia in association with an overseas architectural practice eligible to enter the competition? It is mandatory that at least one member of your team be an architect registered in Australia.
Are UTS staff (full-time, sessional / adjuncts), their partners and/or current consultants to UTS eligible for the competition?Yes. The only exception would be members of the assessment panel (and their partners), who are ineligible.
Are multiple submissions from the same architecture firm (headed up by different registered architects) accepted in the competition?Yes, multiple submissions from the same architectural firm headed up by different registered architects are acceptable. Each team would need to register separately.
We have entered the competition. We would like to take on a larger architecture practice as a capability partner. Can the capability partner also be entered into the competition as an individual entrant?Yes.
Can we change the initial contact in our registration? Does it need to be a registered architect? You can change your registration details, including the registered contact email, via the Applicant Management page. Provided your team includes a registered architect, they don\'t need to be the point of contact.
Applicant Team
We have registered for the UTS Broadway Design Competition as an individual company. How can we register a joint venture entry, with two equal participating companies? The nature of your joint venture should be made clear within your Capability Statement.
As part of either Stage 1 or Stage 2 of the competition, are entrants required to put together a consultant team?Entrants will need to show capability commensurate with the nature of the project (see Design Brief sections 8.4 & 8.5). This does not necessarily require the establishment of a consultant team during the competition.
We are an architecture company intending to lodge a response to Stage 1. Can you please confirm if this stage is to demonstrate architectural capability only, or if we need to nominate our sub-consultant team at Stage 1 as well?Entrants will need to show capability commensurate with the nature of the project (see Design Brief sections 8.4 & 8.5). This does not necessarily require the establishment of a consultant team at Stage 1.
Capability Statement
When is the pro forma Capability Statement due?On 25 February 2009
In the conditions and brief design document it outlines the capability statement as having approximately 10 pages. Is there a maximum page limit including appended pages? No. The suggested response lengths overall and for each individual question are only a guide.
Is it permissible to change the form of the capability statement for presentation purposes? The provided capability statement format should be retained as far as possible. Presentation style will not be judged in the capability assessment.
Can the Pro Forma be submitted as a PDF in lieu of MS Word?Yes.
Is it possible to append additional information, e.g. illustrations in PDF format, for the Stage 1 Capability Statement on the CD as part of the Stage 1 submission? The information provided on the accompanying CDs must replicate the hardcopy submissions.
General Competition Details
Does the Concept Submission need to be in Arial 11pt?No, only the Capability Statement format has been specified.
Will the Site Plan PDF be available as a CAD file?CAD files will be provided to short-listed second stage competition participants.
Is the 3D computer model of the UTS site that was presented in the UTS Masterplan exhibition available to be used for context purposes? No.
Could we have access to photos of the remote laboratories, as mentioned in 14.2 of the design brief? These are not available at this stage.
There is a requirement to submit CDs for each part of the Stage 1 submission. What information is required on the CDs to identify the submission? The Capability Statement CD only should be identified with the name of the Practice or Architect. The Concept Submission CD only should be identified with the Competition Identification Number (CIN).
Could you please advise on the weighting of the assessment for Stage 1 between the capability statement and the concept proposal? The capability statement and the concept proposal are assessed independently by different assessment sub-panels. It is expected that some finalists will be selected on the basis of design concept, and some on the basis of capability.
After the completion of stage 1, will the shortlisted proposals be made public? No. UTS may wish to retain a selection of entries for exhibition at the conclusion of the second stage of the competition.
Is it possible to arrange a site visit?Although the University will not be arranging formal site visits at this stage, interested parties are free to look at the Broadway Building site. It is currently a publicly-accessible car park.
Site Details
Do the area requirements in the brief include circulation and services? The area requirements listed at section 14.3 of the brief do not include circulation and services.
We understand that the building between UTS competition site and Jones Street is heritage listed. Would you please clarify where the UTS site boundaries are?As detailed in the competition brief section 12.3, the competition site is defined by Broadway to the south, Wattle Street to the west, UTS Building 10 to the north and Jones Street to the east. This is inclusive of all buildings within these boundaries.
Do any of the existing buildings on the site need to be preserved? No.
Are there any limitations to the number of levels in the building itself? No.
Are there any site constraints (i.e. servitude, power lines, underlying services, tunnels, passages etc.) which we should be aware of?The site plan details the approximate location of underground electricity cables.
Are there any parking and/or access restrictions relating to the site? There is no street parking on any of the three streets bounding the site. The brief calls for 2 basement car park levels.
Is the right of carriageway part of the site?Yes.
Can we propose a building which covers the entire site, or which, within reason, extends beyond the boundaries of the site?Proposed buildings may cover the entire site.
Are there minimum floor to ceiling height requirements for the laboratories and would any of the functional internal spaces need to be double volume spaces? The University is keen for the building spaces to be adaptable. Most of the envisaged uses can fit in a column free space with a floor to ceiling height of 3m. There is a need for some custom spaces [e.g. tiered lecture theatre] which do not fit those parameters but they are unlikely to be more than 5% of the total space and it is envisaged that they would be located with easy access from ground level.
Building 10 and elsewhere at UTS
What is the nature of the connections to Building10 at levels 2 and 7, as required by section 11.3 of the design brief?A Function Centre with full catering facilities is being developed at level 7 in Building 10. Developing meeting rooms, conference facilities and teaching/learning spaces at the same level in the Broadway Building will provide these spaces with ready access to the catering facilities from the Function Centre kitchen. Level 2 is the main entry floor to Building 10 off Jones Street and developing this as a main connecting floor with the new building is attractive for providing a fully accessible environment. Other floors between levels 2 and 7 are less likely to align exactly.
Are there any co-gen facilities planned elsewhere, either in UTS or the adjacent development? The University is looking at co-gen for this project, and is looking at linking with similar facilities on the Frasers Broadway site.
Please confirm the extent of the existing Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology facilities within the current Building 10.Currently the Faculty of Engineering is located in Buildings 1 and 2, and the Faculty of Information Technology is located in Building 10.
Please confirm if UTS anticipate relocating the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (currently housed in Building 10) to the new Broadway Building. It is proposed to move the combined Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology from Buildings 1, 2 and 10 to the new Broadway Building.
The Concept Plan Application document suggests the refurbishment of the existing Building 10. Please confirm which Faculties are anticipated to be housed in the existing Building 10 following the proposed refurbishment.Building 10 will house the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Health.
